Archaeological town Vinča Belgrade, Serbia

Archaeological town Vinča Belgrade, Serbia

Less than 15 km east of the center of Belgrade, on the right bank of the Danube, is an archeological site Belo Brdo in Vinča, where one of the largest prehistoric settlements in Europe was discovered. Professor M. M. Vasić, the first professional archaeologist in Serbia, began excavations in 1908 which, with interruptions, lasted until 1934. Research was restored in 1978 by testing findings from the Bronze Age and Middle Ages, while the focus shifts back to the Neolithic layers in 1982.

The first settlement in Vinča was founded in the Middle Neolithic period, while in the Early Neolithic it reached its peak. Cultural layers, 8 m thick, still rising above the Danube, have provided a wealth of archaeological finds (remains of houses, pottery, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, stone tools and weapons). This is why Vinča is the eponymous site of the Early Neolithic culture in the Balkan-Carpathian region. traces of later prehistoric and historic periods are noticed above them, as well as the remains of the big Slavic necropolis from the period between the 8th to the 17th century.

The archaeological site Vinča has been a part of the Belgrade City Museum since 1978. The exhibition at the site, guided by a curator, illustrates the eight millennium long existence of Vinča.

Vinča, an archaeological site which reveals the oldest organized settlements in Europe from Neolithic times after which the culture of the central Balkans and the Pannonian plain is called the "Vinča" culture. Smederevo, a medieval town of the last great Serbian ruler Djuradj Brankovic of the early 15 century with a well - preserved fortress on the Danube's bank.

The Vinča culture was pretty advanced for it’s time, even had an alphabet of their own, which is considered one of the oldest in the world. Recent discoveries showed that their main settlement was composed of well aligned houses forming streets between them.

Most figurines and artifacts from Vinča are displayed across museums and galleries in Belgrade, as part of permanent or temporary exhibitions.

Hotel Nordic (ex hotel Zlatna truba), Guča

Hotel Nordic (ex hotel Zlatna truba) in Guča has 3 stars and 120 beds. Also, hotel has restaurant, with Serbian and Dragačev`s specialties. This authentic ethno festival of wind instrument orchestras is favorite for all listeners. It was Emir Kusturica who was, in his film ”Underground” the first to make the Serbian wind instruments’ players famous by playing the music of Goran Bregović. Now the ethno-sound of trumpets can be heard more and more in the night clubs of the Europe’s largest cities.

The village of Gucha in the Dragačevo district, peaceful and colorful part of western Serbia, has gained world fame owing to its Assembly of Trumpet Players, the largest trumpet event on the planet. The love of the people of Dragačevo for music, especially for the trumpet, began in the rule of Prince Miloš Obrenović, who ordered the formation of the first military band in 1831.

From then until now the trumpet has reigned here uninterrupted while woodwind instruments, in keeping with the customs, warm the soul of its population. The sound of the trumpet traditionally accompanies every major event in Serbia’s rural and small-town life: births, baptisms, weddings, Slav (family patron saint day), farewell parties for those joining military service, state and church festivals, harvesting, reaping, and also departing this world. Appropriate music is played on these occasions, thus preserving the spirit of the existing tradition. The music is very diverse: from indigenous melodies, via kolo (a fast-rhythm chain dance), marches and characteristic southern Serbia “čoček” dances, all the way to tunes that have emerged more recently, but always taking care to honor old harmonies.

This music has won over the hearts of not only the local population, but has also warmed the hearts of outsiders and foreigners. In the several days of the Guča festival, hardly anyone can resist giving themselves to the adrenalin-rushing rhythms and melodies that simply force one to jump to ones feet and dance.
